Code of Practice for Parents and Guardians

In supporting your child playing at and being a Member of the Club we encourage you to follow the following code of practice:

  • Encourage your child to learn the rules of tennis
  • Discourage unfair play and arguing with officials
  • Help your child to recognise good performance not just successful results
  • Don’t force an unenthusiastic child to play
  • Never punish or belittle a child for losing or making mistakes
  • Always publically accept judgements made by officials
  • Support your child’s involvement and help them to enjoy their sport
  • Use correct and proper language at all times
  • Allow your child to play in the appropriate Mini Tennis colour stage. This will ensure that they enjoy playing the game, develop their skills and gain confidence
  • Purchase balls and racquets that match the stage your child has reached
  • Be patient, steady progression is unusual in children, they will often peak and plateau
  • Always ask ‘did you enjoy your match?’ rather than ‘did you win?’
  • At no stage should you communicate with your child or interfere with on-court helpers and referees during a match – enjoy the game and let the officials take care of the rules
